What are the Causes of Hemorrhoids?

There are Many Causes of Hemorrhoids to Consider

Several factors can cause hemorrhoids. A hemorrhoid is comprised of blood vessels in the anus that become swollen from pressure in the area and produce a variety of symptoms. Below are several potential causes of hemorrhoids:

Some Causes of Hemorrhoids

  • Chronic Constipation

    • Constipation can cause hemorrhoids when a person strains excessively to pass a bowel movement, putting pressure on the veins in the anus that result in swelling. A diet low in fiber and high in fat can be one cause of constipation, though it can also stem from  other conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome . Not drinking enough water can also lead to constipation by limiting the amount of fluid in the intestines, leading hardening of the stool.
  • Chronic Diarrhea

    • On the opposite side of the spectrum, having chronic problems with diarrhea can result in increased pressure that causes hemorrhoids. Diet and conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome are just a couple causes of diarrhea.
  • Pregnancy & Childbirth

    • Increased pressure from the growing fetus during pregnancy can cause hemorrhoids in pregnant women. Straining while giving birth also causes hemorrhoids to develop in some cases.
  • Excessive Straining

    • Care should be taken to avoid straining to have a bowel movement. Whether by making dietary changes or taking a stool softener as needed, this is one way you may be able to avoid developing hemorrhoids.
  • Obesity

    • Conditions associated with obesity can cause hemorrhoids. These include constipation from poor diet and added pressure in the pelvic region from extra abdominal weight.
  • Sitting Too Long (throughout the day or while on the toilet)

    • Sitting for long periods of time can place pressure on the veins in the rectum and anus, which can cause hemorrhoids to develop.
  • Heavy Lifting

    • Straining while lifting heavy objects causes hemorrhoids to occur due to increased pressure that leads to vein swelling.
  • Age

    • As we age, the tissues that support the veins can weaken or stretch, which causes hemorrhoids to develop.
Find a Doctor

No matter what causes hemorrhoids for you, consulting with a qualified physician is highly recommended. A doctor can determine the cause of hemorrhoids and advise you of the available treatment options. Find a physician in your area or request a consultation online.
